Active Citizenship Weeks – Autumn 2010
A number of organisations in different parts of Ireland are organising Active Citizenship Weeks
The purpose of such weeks is to raise awareness of the many ways in which citizens can contribute to the quality of life of their area.
In our work in the V.P.S.J. we continue to promote active participation in the democratic life of the country at both local and national level. Our different workshops help participants to develop their knowledge and skills. These workshops are both enjoyable and informative.
- The Active Citizenship/Voter Education Programme
- How We are Governed
- Your Community Your Role
- Policy Change at Local Level
- After the Elections
We are very pleased to have been invited to facilitate workshops in Bray, Tallaght, Dublin Inner City and Waterford.
The V.P.S.J. is happy to promote Active Citizenship Weeks and will publish on your website details of such weeks as we receive the relevant information.
The JCI (Junior Chamber International Ireland) is promoting their Active Citizenship Week October 3rd – October 10th 2010
They have produced a very reader friendly resource – 50 ways to be an Active Citizen aswell as ideas for possible street banners for Cities and Towns.

2009 - 2010
Inspite of it being an election free year the period September 2009 – 2010 was a busy one. Twenty four Active Citizenship/Voter Education workshops were facilitated in different parts of the country. All the groups found the workshops to be enjoyable and a ‘big change’ experience. Among disability groups there was particular strong emphasis on helping people to be advocate. A flyer is being posted to community leaders/workers with information about our workshops for the coming year.

After The Elections

Approximately 58% of people living in Ireland voted in the 2009 June Elections.

Many people believe that by casting their vote they have met their obligation to participate in the democratic system. In 5 years time voters will be asking themselves how effective were the Local Councillors and MEPs elected in 2009 in delivering on their promises. Voting at elections time is not enough. If we seek a more just and inclusive society we need to continue to engage with our electoral representatives. This engagement is essential to ensure that promises are honoured and our representatives held accountable!
